We Honor Veterans

Approximately 25 percent of those who die every year in the U.S. are Veterans. To help provide care, honor, and support that reflects the important contributions made by these men and women, Hospice of Douglas County is proud to be partnered with We Honor Veterans. We Honor Veterans is a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We Honor Veterans is designed to empower hospice professionals to meet the unique needs of dying Veterans. As a We Honor Veterans partner, Hospice of Douglas County has implemented ongoing Veteran-centered education for our staff and volunteers to help improve the care we provide to the Veterans we so proudly serve.

Hospice of Douglas County has implemented an innovative model for serving Veterans at the end of life – the Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program. The Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program aims to pair recruited Veteran Volunteers with hospice patients who are Veterans. Once paired with hospice patients who also have military experience, Veteran Volunteers have the unique ability to relate and connect with each patient.

A certificate of recognition acknowledging the military services and sacrifices made by the Veteran is also presented to our Veteran patients by one of our hospice Veteran Volunteers. This recognition can take place at home, in a nursing home, or in a public place of the Veteran’s choosing. At Hospice of Douglas County, we want every Veteran to know we are forever grateful for their service to our country!
